1. Why is LinkedCells better than sharing Excel files?

Putting your Excel workbook on the network is a simple solution, but there are a number of problems with this approach:

  1. Everyone must be on the same network, so it doesn't work well if remote offices or people on the road need to access or share data.
  2. By default, everyone on the network can see and modify your entire workbook, and configuring permissions is difficult.
  3. If multiple people modify the same data, the resulting conflicts must be resolved manually.

LinkedCells resolves all these problems. It is available anywhere you have an Internet connection; you can even work offline and publish or update your data when you are connected again. Controlling who can see your data is easy, you just add those contacts to your publication. Since you retain control of your spreadsheet, you can't get conflicts.

2. Why is LinkedCells better than Google Spreadsheets?

Online applications have improved in the last few years, but will never have the speed, power, and usability of Excel. Excel power users will be continually frustrated by the slower response time and limited functionality of an online spreadsheet.

If you already know Excel, but need to publish your data with other Excel users or get data from other people, LinkedCells makes that easy. LinkedCells lets you subscribe to the data you need from other people and/or publish your data to any Excel user who needs it.

3. Does LinkedCells work with Vista and Excel 2007?

Yes, LinkedCells works with Vista and Excel 2007. You can use Windows 2000 or later, and Excel 2000, Excel XP, Excel 2003, and Excel 2007.

4. How secure is my data?

LinkedCells allows the creator of the publication to choose which contacts can see the data. Unless you specifically choose to publish your data to a contact, they will be unable to see your data. As the publisher of the data, it is always available to you, regardless of the spreadsheet (or the computer) that you are working on.

The second half of the security equation is the quality of the security and the hosting environment. The LinkedCells security model was designed by an experienced software architect and reviewed by a separate team member, who also has significant design experience. LinkedCells follows security best practices (passwords are encrypted with a one-way hash, authentication is resistant to dictionary attack, etc). The servers are hosted in a physically secure environment by Microsoft certified operators. No online application is perfectly secure, but LinkedCells is more secure than most.

5. How do I install LinkedCells?

Installing our software is fast and simple. Download LinkedCells using the button above. The installer will walk you through the install process. Afterwards, just start Excel and you will see the LinkedCells menu. You will be prompted to sign up when you first use LinkedCells.

6. Do I need to register to use LinkedCells?

You can download and install LinkedCells without registering, but you need to provide your email address to start using LinkedCells. We need your email address so that your contacts can share data with you, and so that people you share data with know who the data is coming from. After you install the LinkedCells software and run Excel, you will see a LinkedCells menu. You will be prompted to register when you try to login to LinkedCells.

7. If I want to share data with people that don't have LinkedCells, how do I do it?

When you publish data to a contact, they will receive an email telling them how to download and install LinkedCells.

8. Why are you doing a Beta Test? Why should I participate in your beta program?

We want your comments and suggestions! The Beta gives you a chance to suggest features and influence future versions. LinkedCells has been thoroughly tested by the development team and our external testers, but we are always interested in hearing about any problems you encountered.

By participating in our Beta program, you will be able to influence the development of LinkedCells. If you have features you would like to see in the product, this is an excellent time to recommend them. Please visit the LinkedCells Support Forum.

9. What if I decide I don’t want to publish my data anymore, can I remove it?

Yes. LinkedCells lets you delete publications that are obsolete or that you no longer want to share with other people.

10. What happens if I move the range of data I publish or the location of a subscription?

No problem. LinkedCells follows the cells as they are moved within the spreadsheet.

11. Do I need to be connected to the internet to use LinkedCells?

You can work on Excel spreadsheets with LinkedCells data without being connected to the internet. However, if you want to update publications, subscriptions or contacts, you must be online.

12. What if I move my file - do all the document links break?

LinkedCells does not depend on where you store your Excel file. If you move a file with LinkedCells data from one location to another (either on your computer or on another computer that has the LinkedCells software), LinkedCells will continue updating your publications and subscriptions.
